Excerpt: Dr. Duttenhoffers Black Bag

“Dr. Duttenhoffer lived across from the fire hall, which was known as the Conestoga Valley Fire Co. at the time. The fire alarm was actually set off from their house. Back in his time, he would make house calls and many of the women would give birth at home. Fran Trego remembers that many of the women did not have a doctor's care during pregnancy until they were ready to deliver the baby, and they never talked about it...”

Excerpt: Maggies Quilts

“Margaret McDowell taught Gaynor how to quilt. She lived in the West Tennant House and walking into her house was like entering an antique store. The table was always set with gleaming silverware. She would take Gaynor upstairs where there were two bedrooms. She had a huge chest filled with quilts and when she opened it, you could smell the mothballs!”

Excerpt: Poole Forge

“Poole Forge is a Lancaster County gem. Far from the County's population centers, but not too far off the beaten track, the park is a splendid place for a picnic, a family reunion, or just a lazy summer afternoon. There is something for everyone: peace and quiet; unspoiled land; the beginnings of the Conestoga River; a modern pavilion; and history galore: the ironmaster's mansion and outbuildings; the iron kilns; and to top it off, an authentic covered bridge.”
